Btw I need jon to have the most complicated feelings about Jonahs death you ever did see. I need him to hope he never sees him again and feel the hole where he's supposed to be and why isn't he HERE why is he just gone, how can he just be gone? He was ready to live with taking everyone down to save everyone else but he wasn't ready to just. Live a normal life. With a hole. A hole that's forever festering and growing and he cannot stop it. He doesn't even know if he misses him but he's supposed to be here. There's so much anger and longing and confusion and so so much and it has nowhere to go and it's going to burst out and he's terrified of when it will happen. Hello can anyone hear me. Basically I need somewhere else jonelias and I need it to be SO fucked up

I think you're overall right that jon isn't acknowledging that his desire to take over the panopticon is in part fueled by just wanting to feel powerful and to get a taste of that "agonized bliss," but What Da Hell Do You Mean. you were certainly enjoying the prospect of getting your boyfriend to blow up people who annoyed you. if you just like 'em guilty and miserable then that I cannot fault you for, but I doubt that's your motivation here.

this is a difficult thing to have conversations about because it provokes really strong reactions in people for completely valid and understandable reasons, so please feel free to hit da bricks on this post whenever you want, but I do want to try and analyse the jonmartin slaps. we get three across 160, 169, and 172, and a line addressing it in 173, and then it never happens or comes up again. none of them come out of nowhere, and they mostly fly under the radar until 173 because they all broadly fit the "slapping someone out of a trance in an emergency" trope, but each of them slowly decreases in urgency.

the first time, the apocalypse starts up and martin comes back to find a passed out jon, can't wake him by making noise, and strikes him in a panic. this makes sense, this is a man who has entered a supernatural coma before and martin had no idea what was going on, so of course he'd jump to something desperate.

the second time, they're in a burning building, jude arrives while jon is still mid-statement, and when making noise doesn't work martin slaps him out of it. this makes sense, they were there for jude and if jon didn't come back to himself then she likely would have hurt them, though martin knew that her powers against them were limited.

the third time, jon is getting pulled into into a repeating statement instead of coming out on his own like usual, so martin speaks once or twice to try and get his attention, and then slaps him out of it. this... again, it makes sense, jon was getting trapped, but there was no immediate peril like before, martin just got freaked out and wanted to leave quickly. he seems to get that it was harsh because he apologizes for it, but they don't linger at all, martin just starts in on them having to leave immediately.

the last time it's mentioned is when they're on night street, during what is one of their most intense arguments. jon tries to talk about the suffering of the children there for longer than he needs to in order to make a point, martin cuts him off, and he pointedly says, "thank you for not hitting me this time." it never happens or is brought up again.

to our knowledge, jon doesn't say anything about the slapping until 173. he's not a guy who's known for speaking up when things upset him, he was amiably working with daisy within about a week of her trying to kill him, so it makes sense that he would just sit with this comparatively more minor thing. however, I do think it's relevant to note that, at this point in their relationship, martin will sometimes voice his feelings and boundaries (not listening to statements, not consenting to mind reading, worrying when jon expresses discomfort with his body), while jon doesn't. from the couple of times he does talk about his feelings this season, I think that tendency comes a few places: he has a hard time being aware of his emotions at all, he doesn't know how to evaluate his emotions' importance in comparison to others', he assumes his emotions are obvious and thus people already act with full knowledge of them, and the topic is just hard to make himself talk about. from what he says in 173, I think the slaps bothered him the entire time, but he made himself be fine with it until he was upset with martin for unrelated reasons and finally let it out.

Georgie Barker having worked together with a literal doppelganger not once but TWICE is conceptually so funny, and even more so that she readily recommended her to Melanie and the implication in her special episodes that she is sponsored by avatar-run brands. It would be so funny if her podcast was actually that popular because she keeps trailing her competitors for minions of the Entities.

Okay it's been a while since I listened to all her appearances so I could be misrememberng things but--I feel like Georgie is a lot more like Joshua Gilespie and Sebastian Skinner than people realize. Outside of close people she aggressively stays out of people's business and doesn't poke at things. I don't think that she's feels strong pulls of curiosity and if she does she usually chooses to ignore them. She doesn't even tell her landlord when the lights have gone out. Her default method of interacting with anything that crosses her path is "leave it alone."

So a dopplganger wearing stolen skin gives Melanie weird vibes even before she sees the skin peeling. She notices her odd behavior and the odd smell around her, mostly covered by constant chain smoking. Those are indications something's off. But Georgie? She's just be like "Oh she's odd I guess. She did her job though." Because she never got bothered enough about the weird smell or behavior to notice anything like that.

Part of that is the trauma induced complete lack of fear, I think. What fear is supposed to do is act as a signal to pay more attention. You know, so you pick up on potential threats to your existence. Georgie being unable to feel fear probably means she just isn't going to pay attention to such signals.

Person is over-smoking? She won't think they're possibly trying to cover up some more sinister smell, they're just odd and it's impolite to point it out.

Ex boyfriend got an archivist job and says he thinks it's slowly turning him inhuman? Her first thought is "wait but you don't have a library sciences degree!"

the thing that really makes elias stand out among the rest of the cast, is that he's the only (or at least, one of the select few, but definitely the Only major recurring) character who's unquestionably having fun. everyone else spends copious amounts of time on feeling utterly miserable and it IS miserable around here what with the universe literally tending towards evil, but elias has a) figured out the inherent meaninglessness of it all (well. that's definitely the not podcast thesis but it was the Would Quite Willingly Doom That World brand of transgressive madness in the name of disobeying the divine order of things that motivated him. compels me. always rebel against the gods) and b) karmic justice is simply not a thing within the world of the magnus archives, there's no narrative comeuppance for being a bad (or reward for being good) person, so there's no just deserts to be had here, he died for entirely unrelated reasons and in the grand scheme of things his fate was not all that different from anyone else in the podcast, plus jon also dies mere minutes later. but did he not have fun? did he not ruin everyone else's lives and have fun the entire time?

The thing that’s so funny about jonelias to me is that only 10% of their relationship would be twin pupils of the Eye feeding off your fears monster fuckery and the other 90% would be bitching about their coworkers and quiet nights in

What are your opinions on Jonelias, if you have any? Not the community or w/e (although if you have any particularly strong ones, by all means) but the actual ship/dynamic itself

I think there are some somewhat erotic undertones to their relationship in the text, mainly with how elias continually tries to establish greater commonality and intimacy between them by saying he has a window into jon's True Nature and that he knows jon's mind, motivations, and likely future actions better than jon does. the "that's quite nice actually. tingly, but sort of freeing" and "agonized bliss" lines are fairly undeniably pieces of sexualized language, and the way jon kills elias is suuuper charged and is directly paralleled with martin's later explicitly romantic killing of jon.

elias's fatal flaw that he keeps repeating is that he underestimates people and doesn't even bother to use his mind reading powers when he thinks he's got someone sussed out, and with jon this means that he thinks jon's monstrous becoming has been all about him rather than all about the eye, so he thinks jon won't be able to bring himself to actually hurt him. he's right that jon is always a lot more in-tune with beholding than he'd like to consciously believe, but he is dead wrong that jon will ever see the people around him as objects to observe and discard.

elias is remarkably cruel to him; even beside the, yknow, manipulating him into fourteen distinct magical tortures, the way he talks to him in mag 102 is particularly callous, but it doesn't seem like he actually dislikes jon. his tone shifts completely for his mag 160 statement and he's quite transparent that none of what's happened has been jon's fault and it was instead all down to him, so one gets the impression that his s3 era turbo victim blaming was just part of his scheme to drive jon towards avatar encounters. which is kind of nice, if a little insane, though he does keep up the "we're not do different, you and I" thing up through his last appearance. I think he really believes that jon will eventually come around and see what he did was great, but alas, he doesn't realize that jon is hopelessly down bad for a shitty poet who smells like a beach and has callouses on his hands from his favorite tea mug.

for something community related, I always found it kind of funny that the 2020 tumblr teens were super hard set against jonelias, if you kudos'ed the wrong fic you'd end up on a blocklist, but the 2020 tiktok teens loved it. couldn't get enough. they were making lore-intensive vaguely gothic cult aus. every hannigram cosplayer duo doubled for jonelias and barely had to change a thing.

people don't like to talk about this i'm aware but. elias might like jon but he's also exceptionally, casually cruel and thoughtless with him post-80, the bit that stays with me is the way he raises his voice at jon in 102 as if he's disciplining an unruly child, and this is simply for complaining about being left in nikola's torture chamber for a month. and do you know what. i'm certain he could've gotten him out sooner, but he didn't because "i needed to make sure you felt the fear all the way to your bones", and of course the 160 statement is chock full of condescending paternalism, "once again you came through with flying colours"—doesn't particularly repulse me but it has informed the kind of dynamic i prefer for jonelias - i don't want elias to dote on jon i need jon to start putting elias in saw traps post-160. i guess he can dote on him for a little while, like he can take him to a performance of the orchestra equivalent of grifter's bone in the middle of the apocalypse. but then they go back to putting each other in saw traps.
